The Denver Broncos have acquired quarterback Zach Wilson from the New York Jets via trade, sending a late-round pick to the Jets in return. Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has shown flashes of elite talent but has struggled with consistency throughout his career.
Wilson’s most impressive performance came in Week 4 of the 2023 season against the Broncos’ AFC West rival, the Kansas City Chiefs. He completed 71.8% of his passes for 245 yards, 2 touchdowns, and no interceptions, leading the Jets to a near-upset of the Chiefs. His performance that day was a reminder of the potential that made him the No. 2 overall pick.
While Wilson has not consistently reached those heights, the Broncos are hoping that a change of scenery and a new coaching staff can help him unlock his full potential. With veteran head coach Sean Payton now at the helm, the Broncos believe they have the right environment for Wilson to succeed.
The Broncos’ defense proved in Week 8 that they can shut down even the most potent offenses, holding Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to just nine points. If Wilson can play at the level he did against the Chiefs in Week 4, he could be the missing piece that helps the Broncos challenge for the AFC West title.
This trade does not preclude the Broncos from exploring other quarterback options in the 2024 NFL Draft, but it does give them a solid option at the position and could prove to be a steal if Wilson can reach his full potential in Denver.
