Time for a New England Football Anthem: Frank Skinner Bids Farewell to ‘Three Lions’
The iconic ‘Three Lions’ anthem, a staple at England football matches for over two decades, may finally be nearing its end. Comedian Frank Skinner, who co-wrote the lyrics alongside David Baddiel, believes it’s time for a fresh anthem to take its place.
‘We’ve squeezed all the blood out of that stone now, and we’ve squeezed it hard,’ Skinner joked. ‘We’ve had a really good run.’
The song, released in 1996 for the UEFA European Championship, became an instant hit, topping the UK music charts twice and selling over 1.6 million copies. It has remained a favorite among fans, regularly sung at games worldwide.
However, Skinner feels the anthem has run its course, particularly after its Christmas version for the 2022 World Cup only reached No. 20 in the charts. ‘It’s time for someone else to come up with a new tune,’ he said.
Skinner acknowledges the song’s initial success and lasting popularity, but believes it has had its day. ‘I thought it would go to No. 1 because it’s a great tune, but I didn’t think it would last as long as it has,’ he said.
Despite the end of the anthem, Skinner and Baddiel’s friendship remains strong. ‘I am very star-struck by David, I’d like to make that official,’ Skinner said. ‘We live in the same road and I love him like a brother.’
Skinner’s career in comedy has spanned over 35 years, with his autobiographical skits earning him widespread popularity. He recently announced his departure from Absolute Radio after 15 years, a decision he described as ‘a lowlight of my career.’
Despite the setback, Skinner remains optimistic and believes he will receive work offers. ‘I thought the phone would be ringing like no tomorrow after the news I was available came out, but it’s been deathly silent,’ he joked.
Skinner attributes his longevity in comedy to his relatable and autobiographical material. ‘I think because my comedy is autobiographical, people can relate,’ he said.
As for who will replace ‘Three Lions’ as England’s football anthem, the search is on. Skinner believes it’s time for a new generation of supporters to take up the mantle and release a fresh song that can inspire the team and unite the fans.
