Reds’ Frankie Montas Suffers Forearm Contusion, Placed on Injured List

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frankie Montas suffered a right forearm contusion after being struck by a line drive in Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels. X-rays revealed no fractures, but Montas will be placed on the 15-day injured list.

Montas, who signed a one-year, $16 million contract in the offseason, was only 16 pitches into his start when he was hit by the ball. He was able to throw out the runner at first base but left the game after the team trainer examined his arm.

The Reds have recalled right-hander Casey Legumina from Triple-A Louisville to take Montas’ place on the roster.

Montas had two strong outings before his injury, posting a 4.19 ERA over 19 1/2 innings. The Reds are hoping he can regain his form from seasons past, when he posted a 3.13 ERA over 161 innings for the Oakland Athletics.

Montas missed most of the 2023 season due to a right shoulder injury that required surgery. He underwent shoulder surgery in February and pitched in one game last year.
