The Buffalo Sabres have rehired Lindy Ruff as their head coach. Ruff, 64, previously coached the Sabres from 1997-98 and 2012-13. He comes over from the New Jersey Devils, where he spent four seasons.
Ruff joins Buffalo after a disappointing season with the Devils, who failed to meet expectations under his leadership. He was replaced by Travis Green in March.
Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams said he believes Ruff can help the team turn things around.
“I am thrilled to welcome Lindy back as the head coach of the Buffalo Sabres,” Adams said. “As I went through the hiring process, it quickly became clear Lindy was the person for the job. He has experience, a proven track record, familiarity with young players, and so much more.”
Ruff said he was excited to return to Buffalo and is grateful for the opportunity.
“This is a team ready to take the next step,” he said.
The Sabres have not made the playoffs since 2011 and have struggled in recent seasons. Ruff will be tasked with turning the team around and leading them back to the postseason.
