Brock Purdy has enjoyed unprecedented success for a final pick in the NFL Draft, and the San Francisco 49ers are clearly prepared for their quarterback to ask for an unprecedented contract.
Speaking last month at the NFL league meetings, 49ers owner Jed York said he expected Purdy to “ask for something no one has ever asked for before” when he becomes eligible for a contract extension next offseason. Those comments indicate the Niners anticipate Purdy requesting to become the highest-paid player in NFL history, having secured his place as their franchise quarterback with a spectacular first full season as the starter that saw him finish fourth in the MVP voting and lead San Francisco to within one play of a Super Bowl victory.
But speaking in the week in which the 49ers will add the latest crop of draft picks to their roster, Purdy made it clear that thoughts of contract negotiations in 2025 could not be further from his mind.
“I’m trying to win this year and do everything I can for this organization this year,” Purdy told a press conference on Monday. “Everything else happens how it happens. But for me, I need to get better from last year, on the film, and the things that I saw from last year. My rookie year, it’s like I’ve got this thing in me where I want to continue to master my craft, and that’s that.
“It’s a business, obviously, too. But for me, I love this game. I love just competing with these guys in this organization. I love this organization, and I want to continue to represent myself for them, and in the right way.
“So that’s where I’m at with that. Getting too caught up in all that kind of stuff is, for me, that’s nonsense. So, just taking it one day at a time and getting better.”
Purdy’s comments are reflective of why he is beloved by the 49er organization. Despite becoming the first ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ to throw a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl and deliver production nobody saw coming as the last pick in the 2022 draft, his focus remains fixed on improving himself for the good of the team. There is no thought of recognition for his achievements, financial or otherwise. If he takes further steps forward in mastering his craft in 2024, that unprecedented deal will likely come regardless of Purdy’s thoughts on it.
