Elon Musk and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have been engaged in a war of words over X’s refusal to remove violent content from its platform.
Following the stabbing of an Assyrian church bishop in Sydney during a service, the Australian federal court granted the eSafety commissioner a two-day injunction requiring X to hide certain social media posts related to the attack.
Musk has been pushing back against the Australian government’s calls to take down the content, arguing that the government has no authority to dictate content on a global scale.
On Tuesday, Albanese hit out at Musk, calling him an “arrogant billionaire” and accusing him of fighting to keep violent content on his platform. He emphasized the need for social media companies to take responsibility for the content they host and expressed support for the eSafety commissioner’s efforts to protect the interests of Australians.
The matter will be considered again on Wednesday, and it remains to be seen how the dispute between the Australian government and X will be resolved.
