Charles ‘Todd’ Hill, a former star of HGTV’s ‘Flip It to Win It,’ has been sentenced to jail for real estate and financial fraud. Prosecutors alleged that Hill swindled millions of dollars from 11 victims through various fraudulent schemes.
Hill, nicknamed ‘Mr. Flip-It,’ gained notoriety on the show, which featured teams of renovators competing to flip homes in Silicon Valley. However, his off-screen actions contradicted his on-screen persona.
According to prosecutors, Hill spent millions on lavish renovations, laundered profits, and used fraudulent information to obtain loans. He allegedly created a Ponzi scheme, diverting investors’ money intended for home purchases into his own lavish lifestyle.
In one instance, an investor discovered that a home he had provided $250,000 for remodeling was a burnt-out shell. Hill had failed to complete any work on the property.
Hill’s fraudulent activities came to light after an indictment in November 2019. In September 2023, he was convicted of grand theft against all victims and aggravated white-collar enhancements. Hill was ordered to pay $9.4 million in restitution to his victims.
Following the sentencing, the Santa Clara County judge ordered Hill to report to jail immediately. This case highlights the prevalence of financial fraud in Silicon Valley’s real estate market and the consequences faced by those who engage in such illegal activities.
