Indian-Origin Man Jailed 20 Years for Culpable Homicide of Girlfriend

On Monday, an Indian-origin married man was sentenced to 20 years in jail for culpable homicide after killing his girlfriend due to her relationships with other men.

According to the TODAY newspaper, M Krishnan, 40, admitted guilt last week in the High Court. Justice Valerie Thean noted that despite Krishnan’s claims of being a reformed individual in 2018, he continued to abuse both his wife and girlfriend. While acknowledging that Krishnan’s intermittent explosive disorder contributed to his violent actions, Justice Thean also highlighted the role of alcohol in influencing his behavior.

On January 17, 2019, Mallika Begum Rahamansa Abdul Rahman, 40, died after suffering multiple injuries, including a head injury, several fractured ribs, and bruises. In court, Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Timotheus Koh described the extensive abuse Rahman endured at Krishnan’s hands. He urged the court to send a clear message that such violence would not be tolerated.

Krishnan’s lawyer attempted to mitigate his client’s actions by citing his early guilty plea, surrender to the police, and cooperation during investigations. He also claimed that Krishnan had been controlling his alcohol intake and that Rahman’s relationships with other men had affected his judgment. However, the court ultimately sentenced Krishnan to 20 years in jail, sending a strong message about the consequences of domestic abuse and violence.
