A 16-year-old boy wanted for the assault of an elderly man in Manunda on March 18 has been arrested after attempting to break into the Smithfield police station on Monday.
The boy, who had evaded arrest since the initial incident, allegedly jumped the fence of a compound at the police station and entered an area off-limits to the public, as observed by officers on CCTV monitors.
When confronted by police, the boy reportedly stated that he was looking at a bike parked beside the back door. A search of police records revealed that the boy was a suspect in the assault of the elderly man over a month earlier.
The boy has been charged with seriously assaulting a person aged over 60, trespassing, and failing to appear in court. He was denied bail and is scheduled to appear in Cairns Childrens Court at a later date.
