The British government led by Rishi Sunak is preparing to launch the first deportation flights to Rwanda by July. This comes after the government’s flagship legislation, which designates Rwanda as a “safe” destination for asylum seekers, cleared its final parliamentary hurdle.
Following extensive debates between the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the unelected upper chamber withdrew its opposition to the plan, allowing it to become law. This policy was introduced last year to circumvent a UK Supreme Court ruling that prohibited deportations due to human rights concerns.
The legislation passed after the Lords withdrew an amendment that would have required additional procedures before Rwanda could be designated as “safe” for asylum seekers.
