India Delivers Fourth BrahMos Battery to Philippines Amidst South China Sea Tensions
India is poised to deliver the fourth battery of land-based BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines today, bolstering defense cooperation amidst heightened tensions in the South China Sea.
The BrahMos missiles, with a range of 290 km, are equipped with advanced technology that makes them challenging to intercept, offering a vital deterrent against potential threats. The missiles are mounted on mobile platforms for increased survivability.
India has already provided three batteries of BrahMos missiles to the Philippines, as part of a USD 375 million deal signed in 2022. Each battery comprises four launchers with three missiles, providing a significant boost to the Philippines’ defense capabilities.
This deal has significantly contributed to India’s defense exports, which have crossed ₹ 21083 crores in 2023-2024, registering a remarkable 32.5% year-on-year growth. The success of the BrahMos missiles has enhanced India’s reputation as a reliable supplier of advanced defense systems.
As India continues to expand its defense exports, the government is also exploring a joint venture with the French Naval Group to manufacture Scorpene-class diesel-electric submarines in Mumbai. This collaboration aims to supply submarines to third countries, such as Indonesia and Malaysia, further strengthening India’s defense industry and strategic partnerships.
