Milan to Ban Late-Night Snacks to Curb Noise
Milan is preparing to implement a ban on late-night snacks in an effort to address noise complaints from residents. The proposed law would prohibit the sale of all takeaway food, including pizza, ice cream, and drinks, after 12.30am on weekdays and 1.30am on weekends and public holidays.
The ban aims to clamp down on noisy groups crowding the streets and disrupting the peace of local residents. It would be in effect in 12 of Milan’s districts, including central areas like Brera and Navigli.
The proposal has sparked controversy, with local vendors expressing concerns about lost revenue. They argue that selling gelato late at night is an integral part of Italian culture. However, city officials maintain that the need to protect residents’ peace and health outweighs these economic considerations.
This is not the first attempt by Milan to ban late-night gelato sales. In 2013, a similar proposal failed to pass. Citizens have until early May to appeal and suggest changes to the new law.
