Generational Anomalies: The Importance of Family and Community in Syracuse

Unlike many of my peers, I have chosen to remain in my hometown of Syracuse, where I am surrounded by my close-knit family. My grandparents and even some of my great-grandparents were born here, and I am now raising the fourth generation of Syracusans. This strong sense of community has been a cornerstone of our family’s well-being.

My parents have been invaluable in my daughters’ upbringing. Their relationship is filled with love and laughter, and they enjoy spending time together playing cards, sharing stories, and taking day trips. A few years ago, they purchased a small knickknack for their bookshelf that perfectly captures their sentiments: “If I’d have known being a grandparent would be so much fun, I would have done it first.” This sums up the joy and fulfillment that comes from having a strong family support system.

As the director of the Center for Healthy Aging at InterFaith Works of CNY, I am passionate about promoting the well-being of older adults. I believe that strong community ties and intergenerational connections are essential for healthy aging. My own family’s experience in Syracuse is a testament to the power of these connections.
