FIFA, the global governing body for soccer, is reportedly on the cusp of a transformative agreement with Apple. According to the New York Times, the two entities are finalizing a deal that would grant Apple exclusive global television rights to a novel month-long club tournament. This tournament will feature 32 teams and will take place from June 15 to July 13 next year, an unconventional time slot designed to provide players with a respite before the World Cup. The agreement, which could be announced this month, is estimated to be worth around $1 billion, a significant reduction from FIFA’s initial projection of $4 billion. This development represents a strategic move by Apple to bolster its streaming service in the face of escalating competition among streaming providers for the rights to highly sought-after sporting events. FIFA, however, has faced criticism from players unions for its lack of consultation prior to making announcements about the event. Additionally, sponsors have expressed hesitation in committing the $150 million that FIFA is seeking for sponsorship packages. Despite these concerns, the potential agreement with Apple marks a significant step for FIFA as it ventures into single worldwide contracts for broadcasting rights.
