Level 33 Entertainment Acquires ‘East Bay’ Starring Constance Wu
Level 33 Entertainment has acquired the North American distribution and worldwide sales rights for ‘East Bay,’ a dark comedy starring Constance Wu, known for her roles in ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ and ‘Crazy Rich Asians.’ The film, directed, written, and produced by Daniel Yoon, won the audience award at the Cinequest Film and Creativity festival in San Jose last year.
‘East Bay’ follows a man who, after a series of personal and professional disappointments and feeling let down by his immigrant parents, is forced to confront his perceived failures. His close friends, portrayed by Wu, an arts administrator, a guru, and computer programmers, each face their own struggles as they navigate societal pressures to be happy and successful. As the man tries to get back on track, he experiences hallucinations that make him question the boundaries of reality.
Daniel Yoon, a Canadian-American with Korean roots, draws on his personal experiences for ‘East Bay.’ He previously wrote and directed ‘Post Concussion’ in 1999, a semi-autobiographical comedy about a man recovering from a head injury. In ‘East Bay,’ Yoon takes on the lead role, while Kavi Ramachandran Ladnier (‘NCIS: LA,’ ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’) plays another pivotal member of the support team.
Andreas Olavarria, President and CEO of Level 33 Entertainment, praised Yoon’s ingenuity and resourcefulness in bringing together a talented team and creating a captivating film. He also highlighted Wu’s exceptional performance, describing it as the finest of her career, and commended Ladnier’s spectacular contribution to the film.
The acquisition of ‘East Bay’ by Level 33 Entertainment paves the way for the film’s release in North American theaters next month, followed by a digital release. Audiences can anticipate a thought-provoking and entertaining exploration of failure, friendship, and the search for meaning in a world that often demands perfection.
