Fox Valley Couple’s Short Film to Premiere at Beverly Hills Film Festival
Two former Fox Valley residents, Nathan and Shelby Slager, are making their mark in the film industry with their debut short film, “Chasing June.” The film will premiere at the esteemed Beverly Hills Film Festival on May 4, showcasing their talent and the depth of their storytelling.
Hailing from St. Charles and Elgin respectively, the Slagers have drawn inspiration from their own experiences to create a poignant and emotionally charged film. “Chasing June” explores the profound impact of loss and the complexities of grief through the intertwined lives of three friends: Oliver, June, and Michael. A tragic accident on the night of their high school graduation sets them on divergent paths, and years later, Oliver’s return home forces him to confront the past he has tried to avoid.
Nathan Slager, who studied English Literature at North Central College, brings a nuanced understanding of the human psyche to the screenplay, while Shelby Slager, a theater alumnus of the same institution, lends her expertise to the film’s visual storytelling. Together, they have crafted a screenplay that is both visually stunning and emotionally resonant.
“Chasing June” was filmed over five days in November 2022 at various locations in Elgin and Burlington, including Shelby Slager’s childhood home and Burlington Central High School. The film features a talented cast, including Sargon Odicho as Oliver, Craig Ymson as Michael, and Shelby Slager herself in the title role of June. Odicho and Ymson, both hailing from the Fox Valley area, bring a local connection to the film.
The Slagers’ passion for filmmaking is evident throughout “Chasing June.” They immersed themselves in the project, writing the screenplay together and collaborating closely on every aspect of production. Their dedication and artistic vision have culminated in a remarkable short film that is sure to captivate audiences at the Beverly Hills Film Festival and beyond.
After its festival run, the Slagers plan to submit “Chasing June” to film festivals worldwide, with the ultimate goal of expanding it into a full-length feature. Their journey is a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring bond between two creative minds.
