The U.S. Justice Department has reached a $138.7 million settlement with over 100 individuals who accused the FBI of mishandling sexual assault allegations against Larry Nassar. This settlement adds to the $1 billion already set aside by various organizations to compensate victims of Nassar’s abuse. Acting Associate Attorney General Benjamin Mizer stated that Nassar violated the trust of those in his care for decades and expressed regret for the FBI’s failure to take the allegations seriously from the outset. FBI Director Christopher Wray had previously apologized to survivors at a Senate hearing in 2021 for the FBI’s inaction in 2015. Notable Olympians and survivors of Nassar’s abuse include Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, and McKayla Maroney. Rachael Denhollander, who was the first to publicly come forward about Nassar’s abuse, expressed gratitude for the accountability but emphasized that many survivors never receive justice or restitution.
