Government Prioritizes Addressing Missing Persons’ Issue, Forms Committee

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar recently addressed the issue of missing persons in Pakistan, stating that only 23% of over 10,000 registered cases remain pending. The government is committed to resolving this longstanding issue and has formed a committee on missing persons under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s directives. The committee, which will include representatives from various political parties, will work alongside the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances (CIoED) to address the issue. Tarar highlighted the need for a political solution along with legal remedies, acknowledging the involvement of some missing persons in terrorism-related incidents while also recognizing that not all reports are accurate. The government is committed to finding a comprehensive solution to the issue, which has affected many families and communities in Pakistan over the past four decades.
