Paris-based XR distributor Diversion Cinema has partnered with the Cannes Film Festival to manage the inaugural Immersive Competition this year. Specializing in location-based exhibitions, Diversion will handle the technical responsibilities for the 14 immersive experiences featured in the competitive and non-competitive sections. The immersive showcase will run concurrently with the film event and occupy 700 sq. m. at the Cineum, a multiscreen multiplex located three miles from the Palais and an official festival site since 2021. Diversion will deploy a team of eight to welcome festival attendees daily. Diversion founder Camille Lopato highlights the company’s dedication to supporting festivals like Cannes, noting that it was one of their first clients in 2016 when they embraced VR screenings with enthusiasm. Lopato commends Cannes’ continued commitment to immersive experiences, particularly multiplayer creations, and expresses excitement about introducing these experiences to festival-goers who may not be familiar with VR. Diversion’s participation extends beyond Cannes, as they will also be a major player at the upcoming NewImages Festival in Paris from April 24 to 28. The XR distributor has already acquired the NewImages competition title “Over the Rainbow,” an immersive theater experience that explores dreams and desires through 360 VR. Diversion will also be present at the NewImages Market, the industry’s largest immersive-oriented market, as both buyers and sellers. Lopato emphasizes their focus on acquiring works that align with the needs and interests of cultural institutions and audiences, prioritizing storytelling as a core element of their acquisition strategy.
