The NFL is continuing to investigate the Atlanta Falcons’ trade for quarterback Kirk Cousins and the Philadelphia Eagles’ signing of running back Saquan Barkley for potential violations of tampering rules. According to NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the reviews are ongoing, but no decision is anticipated before the NFL Draft, which begins Thursday in Detroit. Cousins, a former Michigan State star, signed a four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons in March. The NFL is also examining the Eagles’ acquisition of Barkley from the New York Giants. NFL Network reported that the league is collecting information and that the investigation will extend beyond this week. As a result, 2024 draft picks will not be affected by any potential discipline, but future selections could be. The NFL has a history of adjusting draft pick rights based on tampering findings. NBC Sports’ Mike Florio suggests that a third-round pick may be at risk. During the 52-hour negotiating window, teams are permitted to communicate directly with agents. However, they are prohibited from speaking to players who do not have agents and represent themselves. Although Cousins was not allowed to have contact with the Falcons prior to the deadline, he hinted at a possible meeting with Atlanta’s trainer during his introductory press conference. Cousins stated, “There’s great people here. And it’s not just the football team. I’m looking at the support staff. Meeting — calling, yesterday, calling our head athletic trainer, talking to our head of PR. I’m thinking, we got good people here. And that’s exciting to be a part of.” According to NFL Network, these public remarks and others have drawn additional scrutiny from the league. The 2024 NFL Draft will take place in Detroit’s Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza, beginning Thursday night and concluding Saturday.
