Cleveland, Ohio – Look up in the sky, and you might just see Superman. The Man of Steel is making a return to his hometown as filming for the upcoming Superman movie, tentatively titled ‘Genesis,’ is set to take place in Cleveland and Cincinnati this summer. The film, directed by James Gunn of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ franchise, is expected to be a major production, with a budget of around $37 million in Ohio. Casting calls have been announced for background actors and stand-ins, with filming scheduled to take place in Cleveland from June 17th to July 16th and in Cincinnati from July 17th to 18th. The casting call suggests that the Ohio portion of the production will be more involved than just second-unit scenes, and that the film could potentially be on a similar scale to ‘The Avengers’ or ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ which were both filmed in downtown Cleveland in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The ‘Superman’ project was awarded an $11 million tax credit to film in Cleveland and Cincinnati, adding to the excitement for the film’s production in the state. Originally titled ‘Superman: Legacy,’ production on the reboot began in Atlanta in late February. David Corenswet will star as Clark Kent/Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult will take on the role of the classic villain Lex Luthor. The cast also includes Cleveland native Isabela Merced (‘Madame Web’) as Hawkgirl. While the plot of the film is still a closely guarded secret, the studio has said that the story will center on ‘Superman’s journey as he tries to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.’ The beloved superhero was created by Cleveland natives Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1933, and the new film is sure to be a welcome addition to the Superman legacy. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
