Caroline Durridge, a 64-year-old teaching assistant from Cardiff, Wales, has sparked a debate about ageism and beauty standards after claiming that she is “hotter” than her 38-year-old daughter, Amanda. Durridge says she often gets mistaken for her daughter’s younger sister due to her youthful looks and slim figure. She believes that Amanda would look much better if she ditched her leggings and baggy jumpers in favor of more flattering clothes and makeup.
Amanda, on the other hand, is not impressed with her mother’s fashion advice and says she is comfortable with her own style. She believes that her mother is being shallow and meddlesome. “I only gave birth to my third child five weeks ago, so when mum gets mistaken for my sister, it makes me angry,” Amanda said. “I can’t be bothered with make-up and I don’t want to spend hours faffing in the mirror and worrying about bodycon dresses.”
Durridge, who is a size 10/12 and goes to the gym for an hour every day, says she has good genes and takes pride in her appearance. She spends £150 a month on bodycon dresses and tops, and gets her hair dyed and cut every six weeks. “I’m still a size 10/12 and I get my hair dyed and cut every six weeks, so I always look immaculate,” she said. “I’ve got good genes too, with great cheekbones and firm, size 36DD boobs, despite the fact I’ve not had any cosmetic work done.”
Amanda, who is a size 16, says she is happy with her appearance and does not feel the need to change her style. She believes that her mother is being judgmental and that she should focus on her own appearance. “My partner loves me for me, not for my make-up and fashion choices,” she said. “He just rolls his eyes when mum starts meddling. He tells me I am beautiful.”
