Missing Syracuse Man Found Dead

Paul Hughes, a 74-year-old Syracuse resident, was reported missing on Saturday, April 20, 2024, after leaving his home in the 200 block of Hillsdale Avenue around 5:05 p.m. On Tuesday, April 23, police located Hughes deceased in the 1900 block of Burnet Avenue, less than a mile away from his residence.

Police commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Hughes’ death, but have stated that it does not appear to be criminal in nature. Hughes had a history of suicidal threats and may have been in possession of a shotgun when he went missing.

Hughes’ body was discovered around 3:15 p.m. by authorities. Police had issued a missing person alert, expressing concern due to Hughes’ previous threats of self-harm and the possibility that he may have been armed.
