The suspect arrested in connection with breaking into Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’ home has been revealed to have a history of violent crimes in Massachusetts, according to court documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times. Ephraim Hunter, 29, faces burglary charges in connection with the break-in at the Getty House, the official residence of the city’s mayor, early Sunday morning. Hunter allegedly entered the home while Mayor Bass and her relatives were present, taking advantage of a shift change between security guards.
Hunter, now a resident of Los Angeles, was booked on suspicion of burglary and is being held on $100,000 bail. However, court records reveal a troubling criminal past in Massachusetts. In 2015, Hunter was arrested along with three others in Millis, Massachusetts, for an assault that left a man unconscious. Using a hammer and a snow brush, Hunter and his accomplices beat the victim and dragged him into a van. When police arrived, they found the victim with no pants on and blood on his leg and head.
Following his arrest, Hunter was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and served seven years in state prison. Upon his release, he relocated to Los Angeles to live with his brother.
In a press conference on Monday, Mayor Bass assured reporters that she and her family were safe and that they would continue to prioritize the safety of Angelenos. The break-in at the Getty House marks the second such incident at Bass’ home in the past three years.
