Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to bring the iconic character Shadow to the big screen when it releases later this year. In an interview with GamesRadar+, producer Toby Ascher revealed that the film will draw heavily from Sonic Adventure 2, a beloved game in the series.
Ascher said, “It’s going to be this giant, fun, incredible movie that obviously takes a lot from Sonic Adventure 2 and some of the games that I know the core Sonic Team grew up loving.” Sonic Adventure 2 is regarded as one of the high points in the Sonic franchise. Released for the Sega Dreamcast in 2001, the 3D sequel featured fast-paced platforming, over-the-top cutscenes, and catchy music. It also introduced Shadow the Hedgehog, who quickly became a fan favorite.
Sonic Adventure 2 is known for its ambitious scope, with moments ranging from space travel to mech battles. Ascher hinted that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will incorporate some of these classic elements, but how they will be adapted for the film remains to be seen.
The film will also feature Keanu Reeves as Shadow, a casting choice that has excited fans since it was announced earlier this month. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is scheduled to release in theaters on December 20th, 2024. Fans can expect a grand spectacle that pays homage to the beloved elements of Sonic Adventure 2 while expanding the cinematic universe of the Blue Blur.
