The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to welcome Arthur Smith as their new offensive coordinator for the upcoming 2024 season. Smith, widely recognized for his successful stint as offensive coordinator with the Tennessee Titans, steps into the role previously held by Matt Canada, who was relieved of his duties mid-season last year.
Pat Freiermuth, a Steelers tight end, reached out to Kyle Pitts, a Falcons tight end who previously worked with Smith in Atlanta, to gather insights. Pitts spoke highly of Smith, commending his passion, drive, and the offensive system he brings.
Mike Tomlin, the Steelers’ head coach, expressed admiration for Smith’s approach and values. He highlighted Smith’s alignment with the team’s vision of dominating through their big players and building from that foundation. Tomlin also acknowledged the strong relationships he has with individuals who have significantly influenced Smith’s development, contributing to his confidence in bringing him on board.
Smith’s dismissal from the Falcons came after three seasons as their head coach, with a record of 7-10 each season. However, during his tenure as offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, Smith achieved notable success. In his first season in 2019, the Titans ranked 10th in scoring and third in rushing, showcasing their strengths in offensive line play and the exceptional abilities of running back Derrick Henry. This approach became the blueprint for the franchise, as they finished fourth in scoring in 2020 despite having a below-average passing attack.
