The Senate has approved a massive foreign aid package that includes billions of dollars for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, in addition to provisions targeting China and Iran. The legislation, which passed with a 79-18 vote, is now on its way to President Biden’s desk for his signature.
The package allocates $60.8 billion to Ukraine, $15 billion to Israel with an additional $9 billion in humanitarian aid, and $8 billion to Taiwan. The bill also includes measures to pressure China and Iran, as well as a provision that could force TikTok, the popular social media app, to sell its U.S. operations within nine months due to concerns over its ties to the Chinese government.
The House of Representatives had passed similar legislation in March, but it had stalled in the Senate. However, with the recent surge in support for Ukraine following Russia’s invasion, the Senate was able to overcome Republican opposition and pass the package.
The legislation has faced some criticism from conservative lawmakers, who argue that it does not provide enough funding for border security. However, the Senate rejected a motion to vacate the bill, and it is now expected to be signed into law by President Biden.
The passage of the foreign aid package is a significant step in providing support to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, while also addressing concerns about China and Iran. The legislation demonstrates the Senate’s commitment to global security and its willingness to take action to address threats to U.S. interests.
