Lou Conter: The Last Pearl Harbor Survivor Laid to Rest

In a touching display of gratitude and respect, the Grass Valley community bid farewell to Lou Conter, the last living survivor of the USS Arizona during the Pearl Harbor attack. The streets and sidewalks were adorned with patriotic symbols as veterans, friends, and family members gathered to honor his legacy.

Conter’s life was marked by unwavering service and sacrifice. He not only survived the horrors of Pearl Harbor but also a plane crash in enemy territory during World War II and the Korean War. Despite his extraordinary experiences, he remained humble, acknowledging the true heroes were those who had fallen.

Vietnam War veteran Fred Bryner spoke of Conter’s sacrifice as representing the ultimate sacrifice, while Coast Guard veteran Bill Eldredge described him as a great person who didn’t seek recognition. Sheila Becker, whose father fought alongside Conter in World War II, expressed her profound respect for the veterans who had given so much for their country.

As Conter was laid to rest, the community reflected on his life and the countless others who had served with unwavering courage. His passing serves as a reminder of the immense debt of gratitude we owe to all those who have defended our nation.
