In the Democratic primary for the 45th state Senate seat, Nick Pisciottano, a state representative from West Mifflin, secured a decisive victory over Makenzie White, a social worker and environmental consultant from Brentwood. With approximately 42% of precincts reporting, Pisciottano garnered 15,193 votes, while White received 5,808. The seat is currently held by retiring Democratic Senator Jim Brewster, who endorsed Pisciottano as his successor.
In the Republican primary, Jen Dintini, who runs two security guard businesses and resides in Plum, emerged victorious over Kami Stulginskas, chair of the Steel Valley Republican Committee from Munhall. Dintini received 6,304 votes compared to Stulginskas’ 1,417, according to incomplete and unofficial results.
The 45th Senatorial District encompasses Allegheny County’s Mon Valley and eastern and southern suburbs, including Plum, Monroeville, Brentwood, Baldwin, and Castle Shannon. Republicans have set their sights on flipping the seat in November to bolster their majority in the state Senate, while Democrats are determined to retain it to enhance their chances of gaining control. The district favors Democrats, with Democrats holding a 2-1 voter registration advantage.
As the general election approaches, Pisciottano and Dintini will engage in a competitive race to secure the seat. The outcome will have significant implications for the balance of power in the state Senate.
