Off-Highway Vehicle Safety: Utah’s Educational Course and Tips
Following a fatal crash involving an off-highway vehicle (UTV), the Division of Outdoor Recreation emphasizes the importance of safety when operating off-highway vehicles. Chase Pili, the off-highway vehicle program manager for the division, highlights the online education course mandatory for Utahns over 18 years of age.
The course covers essential information on safe and ethical off-highway vehicle operation, with 26 questions accompanied by educational videos. Completing the course ensures compliance with Utah Code and equips users with the knowledge and skills necessary for safe operation.
Pili emphasizes the significance of wearing seatbelts and helmets, operating within personal and vehicle capabilities, and recognizing the differences between off-highway vehicles and on-road vehicles. Off-highway vehicles are designed for off-road use, with limited safety mechanisms compared to road vehicles.
Since the implementation of the education course in January 2023, approximately 268,000 individuals have completed it. Pili acknowledges that different vehicles may have specific safety requirements, but generally recommends helmets and seatbelts for all off-highway vehicle users.
Despite some negative feedback, the course has received positive responses for its educational value. Rangers are actively patrolling trails to educate riders about the course. By adhering to these safety guidelines, Utahns can minimize risks and enjoy responsible off-highway vehicle recreation.
