In the Democratic primary, DePasquale secured over 344,000 votes, comfortably surpassing the 38% threshold for victory. His closest rival, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer, trailed with 19%, followed by former Bucks County solicitor Joe Khan at 16%, former public defender Keir Bradford-Grey at 14%, and state Rep. Jared Solomon at 13%.
On the Republican side, Sunday garnered a substantial lead over his opponent, Delaware County state Rep. Craig Williams. With over 70% of the votes in his favor, Sunday claimed victory against Williams’ 30%.
In his victory speech, DePasquale emphasized his commitment to safeguarding abortion rights and protecting Pennsylvanians from the perceived threat of right-wing extremism. He vowed to make Pennsylvania a sanctuary for women seeking reproductive healthcare from states with restrictive abortion laws. He also pledged to defend American democracy, highlighting its birthplace in Pennsylvania.
Sunday, on the other hand, dismissed DePasquale’s accusations of being a ‘MAGA Republican’ with a laugh. While acknowledging Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, Sunday reiterated his campaign’s focus on addressing crime and ensuring the safety of Pennsylvanians. He believes that safe communities are essential for overall well-being.
Both Sunday and Williams have previously stated that the legality of abortion should be determined by the legislature, as there is no explicit protection for abortion rights in the state constitution.
