Irfan Pathan Selects India’s T20 World Cup Squad, Excludes Sanju Samson, KL Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad

With the IPL 2024 season nearing its end, the focus shifts towards the upcoming T20 World Cup. Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has shared his insights into the ideal Indian squad for the global event, making some surprising omissions and selections.

Pathan’s squad features a few predictable choices, such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav. However, he has opted for Yashasvi Jaiswal as Sharma’s opening partner, overlooking the in-form Sanju Samson and KL Rahul.

Samson has been in exceptional form for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024, amassing 314 runs at an average of 62.8 and a strike rate of 152.4. Despite his impressive performances, Pathan has given the nod to Jaiswal, citing his aggressive and dynamic batting style.

Another notable omission from Pathan’s squad is Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is currently second on the IPL 2024 Orange Cap list with 349 runs. Pathan has preferred Jaiswal’s left-handed batting and aggressive approach over Gaikwad’s more conventional style.

Pathan has also included Rishabh Pant as India’s standalone wicketkeeper, leaving out both Samson and Rahul. Pant’s inclusion is based on his consistent performances for Delhi Capitals in the IPL and his impressive record in T20 cricket.

In terms of all-rounders, Pathan has opted for Shivam Dube as the third option alongside Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja. Dube’s explosive batting and handy medium pace bowling have earned him a spot in Pathan’s squad.

For the spin department, Pathan has selected Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal as the frontline spinners, leaving out Axar Patel. Chahal’s experience and recent resurgence in form have made him the preferred choice over Patel.

The pace attack remains largely unchanged, with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh forming the core. Pathan has not included Shubman Gill as a regular opener but has kept him as a backup option.

Pathan’s squad selections have sparked discussions and debates, highlighting the intense competition for places in the Indian T20 World Cup team. With a limited time remaining before the tournament, players will be keen to impress the selectors and secure their spots in the final squad.
