Horrifying footage has emerged, capturing the terrifying moment when heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and cars were forced to swerve desperately to avoid a car driving on the wrong side of the M1 motorway in Yorkshire. The incident unfolded on Saturday, March 9, at around 2:45 am, near Junction 31 of the M1. South Yorkshire Police released the harrowing video evidence, which shows the car dangerously traveling southbound in the northbound lanes. The vehicle continued in the wrong direction for two junctions before exiting the motorway, prompting numerous calls from alarmed motorists. National Highways’ cameras recorded the vehicle’s entry onto the motorway and its subsequent wrong-way journey. Officers from South Yorkshire Police swiftly intercepted the vehicle and administered a breathalyzer test, which revealed the driver’s blood alcohol level was 125mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath – significantly over the legal limit of 35mg. Inspector Matt Collings from the Roads Policing Group expressed the potential for catastrophic consequences, emphasizing that impaired driving can result in fatal collisions due to poor judgment and erratic driving behavior. He issued a stern warning about the dangers of drinking and driving, highlighting the increased risk of involvement in collisions under the influence of alcohol. The police are committed to preventing individuals who pose a risk on the roads and are actively supporting the Fatal4 campaign during April, raising awareness about the primary contributors to fatal and serious collisions. The driver, a man in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and dangerous driving. He has been bailed while investigations continue.
