Several posters supporting Robert Vadra’s candidature for the Amethi Lok Sabha seat were put up outside the Congress office on Wednesday, fueling speculation about his potential entry into politics. The posters, which read “Amethi ki janta kare pukaar, Robert Vadra abki bar (People of Amethi call for Robert Vadra this time)”, have emerged amid rumors that Rahul Gandhi may also contest from the constituency.
Earlier last month, Vadra hinted at joining active politics, saying that the people of Amethi expect him to make his political debut from the constituency. Speaking to ANI, Vadra said that the people of Amethi were upset with sitting MP Smriti Irani and wanted a member of the Gandhi family to return.
“Whoever represents Rae Bareli or Amethi must work for the progress of people, their security and should not play politics of discrimination. The people of Amethi are very upset with their current Member of Parliament,” Vadra said. “They believe that they made a mistake as she doesn’t visit (her constituency) often. She does not think about the progress of the area. She only cares about leveling accusations against the Gandhi family, demeaning them and misusing her power,” he added.
The Congress has not yet revealed its candidate for the party’s stronghold, Amethi. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi from Amethi, a seat which he had represented for 15 years.
The development comes as the nomination filing deadline approaches, intensifying the speculation surrounding Vadra’s potential candidacy. It remains to be seen whether he will formally enter the political arena and contest the Amethi Lok Sabha seat.
