Fashion Brand M&Co to Make High Street Return Just One Year After Axing All Stores
Fashion brand M&Co is poised to make a triumphant return to the high street just one year after closing all of its stores. The retailer is set to open a brand new store in Newton Mearns, Scotland in a matter of weeks.
This marks a significant milestone for the brand since being taken over by AK Retail Holdings in May 2023. M&Co, which fell into administration in 2022, was first anticipated to return in autumn 2023. Competitor retailer Yours Clothing acquired the M&Co brand and intellectual property after the chain entered administration in December 2022.
At the time, Yours Clothing revealed plans to open 50 new M&Co shops over two years, but there was still no sign of the brand on the high street at the end of 2023.
The new store will be located where the previous one stood before it went into administration and is expected to welcome customers from May 3. Sandra McPherson, head of retail for M&Co stores, expressed her excitement about the reopening:
“We are thrilled to welcome back our loyal customers in-store. This expansion symbolises our commitment to bringing stores back to the high street and connecting with customers. I look forward to personally welcoming customers back on the opening day.”
The Newton Mearns store will offer a wide range of fashionable, quality clothing in UK sizes 8-20, including the M&Co petite range. Six jobs will be created to launch the branch, which will provide exclusive discounts for customers who attend the opening, including a £5 voucher off a £25 spend for the first 50 customers.
Andrew Killingsworth, chief executive of M&Co, commented:
“The opening of our Newton Mearns store embodies our commitment to both the Scottish heritage of the brand and investment of our valued customers. We know how valued in-store shopping is, and we hope this store brings excitement for future store openings.”
M&Co has existed online since June 2023, when it “relaunched” for the first time since its administration. But calls for the brand to return in a physical capacity have now been answered. A tweet from the brand on Twitter read: “You asked, we listened. Our first store is opening in Newton Mearns, Glasgow at The Avenue shopping centre. We can’t wait to welcome you all back.”
