Windows 11 Update Sparks Controversy with Start Menu Ads

Microsoft has released an optional update (KB5036980) for Windows 11, which has drawn criticism for introducing advertisements to the Start Menu. The update is available for users running Windows 11 versions 23H2 and 22H2 and can be installed through Windows Update or downloaded from the Update Catalog.

After installing the update, users may notice a new advertisement for the Opera browser in the Recommended section of the Start Menu. Other ads have also been reported, including one for Password1 Manager.

Microsoft has defended the move, claiming that the ads are intended to recommend helpful apps from the Microsoft Store. However, users can disable the ads by going to Settings > Personalization > Start and turning off the “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more” option.

The update also introduces additional features, such as app recommendations in the Start Menu, a non-pixelated taskbar widget icon, and more lock screen management options.

The inclusion of ads in key Windows 11 features, such as the Start Menu and Settings app, has been met with resistance from some users who argue that it degrades the user experience and feels intrusive. Microsoft is currently testing Xbox Game Pass ads in the Settings app, further raising concerns about the company’s approach to advertising in its operating system.
