Initially met with doubts about the on-screen chemistry between Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, the romantic comedy ‘Anyone But You’ has defied expectations and become a box office sensation. Now, Powell himself admits that the romance rumors swirling around the lead stars played a role in the film’s success.
In an interview with The New York Times, Powell acknowledged the significance of chemistry in selling a romantic comedy. He praised Sweeney’s intelligence and their effortless chemistry, noting that it translated into a desire among audiences to see the romance extend beyond the screen.
Despite a lackluster opening weekend, grossing only $6 million in the U.S., ‘Anyone But You’ experienced a surge in ticket sales following the publicity surrounding the romance rumors. The film went on to amass over $200 million, making it the highest-grossing R-rated romantic comedy since ‘Bridget Jones’ Baby’ in 2016.
