Affordable Housing to Be Built on Stoney Creek Parking Lot
Amidst heated debate and opposition from Stoney Creek councillors, Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath has utilized her strong mayor powers to override the council’s initial rejection of developing affordable housing on a city-owned parking lot. The project, which includes the construction of two buildings with 67 affordable units, has been approved by the majority of the council, as required under provincial law.
The land, located at 5 and 13 Lake Ave. S., is considered ideal for the project due to its zoning and proximity to transit and services. Mayor Horwath emphasized the pressing need for affordable housing in the city, stating, “We absolutely must do everything we can to get people housed as quickly as possible.”
However, Stoney Creek councillors voiced concerns about the impact losing parking spots would have on local businesses. Councillor Matt Francis expressed his discontent with the mayor’s decision, calling it “a stomp on the will of an entire community.”
Despite the opposition, Councillor John-Paul Danko expressed frustration with the pushback, arguing that the loss of a few dozen parking spots should not hinder the development of much-needed affordable housing.
The city’s housing secretariat had previously selected the site along with properties in other wards, which were previously approved by the council. Mayor Horwath has indicated that more city land will be proposed for affordable housing in the coming months and urged councillors to refrain from circulating inaccurate or inflammatory information that could create division.
The project is expected to address the city’s growing housing crisis and provide much-needed affordable housing options for residents.
