In 2024, the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame (IJHF) will induct seven esteemed journalists, including Francisco Figueroa (1896-1951), the founder of Indiana’s first Spanish-language newspaper, El Amigo del Hogar, which means “A Friend of the Home.” Figueroa’s publication served as a vital platform for the Mexican immigrant community in Northwest Indiana’s steel-producing cities. After Figueroa’s passing, his son Luis took over as head printer, with his wife Eve assisting in office operations. By the 1950s, the newspaper had evolved into The Latin Times of East Chicago.
The other inductees for 2024 are Bill Benner, a sports writer and columnist for The Indianapolis Star; Sandra Chapman, a broadcaster for WISH-TV Indianapolis; Eric Deggans, an NPR TV and radio critic; Max Jones, editor of the Terre Haute Tribune-Star; Wallace Terry, a journalist and documentarian; and Kathy Tretter, publisher of the Spencer County Leader, Dale News, and Ferdinand News.
The IJHF’s induction process begins with public nominations, followed by a selection process by the organization’s board. This year, the board partnered with Butler University to enhance the promotion and preservation of Indiana journalists’ work.
The induction ceremony will take place on April 27th at the Woodland Country Club in Carmel, Indiana. With the addition of these seven individuals, the IJHF will have inducted over 200 members since its inception in 1966, recognizing their outstanding contributions to journalism and press freedom.
