In a move that has been met with widespread approval, Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson has proposed renaming the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery in memory of his predecessor, former Atlantic County Executive Dick Squires. The cemetery, which was originally dedicated in 1985, has grown over the years to include nearly 30 acres and a columbarium for 900 cremation urns. It currently serves as the final resting place for nearly 6,500 military veterans and their families.
Levinson stated that the renaming is a fitting tribute to Squires, who he described as a dedicated public servant who always put the needs of veterans first. Squires, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 91, was a Korean War veteran who served on the USS Wisconsin. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the cemetery and was laid to rest there with his wife, Winnie.
The proposal to rename the cemetery has been met with support from Squires’ family and the veteran community. Squires’ eldest son, Keith, said that his father would be honored by the gesture and that he dedicated his life to supporting the men and women who serve our great nation and protect our freedoms.
The Atlantic County Board of Chosen Freeholders is expected to vote on the proposal at its next meeting. If approved, the cemetery will be officially renamed the Richard E. Squires Veterans Cemetery.
