Freeze Warning Issued for Northcentral Pennsylvania

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a freeze warning for several counties in northcentral Pennsylvania, including Northern Centre, Southern Centre, Southern Clinton, Southern Lycoming, Warren, McKean, Elk, Cameron, Clearfield, Union, Snyder, Montour, Northumberland, and Columbia. The warning is valid from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Thursday.

According to the NWS, sub-freezing temperatures of 25 to 30 degrees are expected. These conditions can threaten crops, other sensitive vegetation, and unprotected outdoor plumbing.

The NWS advises residents to take protective measures now, as freezing temperatures could damage or kill tender plants and vegetation. Potted plants should be brought inside.

Freeze warnings are typically issued from May to October when low temperatures are expected to drop below freezing. If there is a potential for temperatures to fall into these thresholds, a freeze watch may be issued a few days ahead of time.

The NWS notes that if a freeze warning or watch is issued for your area, there is little you can do to protect plants. If you can move your sensitive plants inside, do so because the freeze will likely kill them, depending on the severity of the conditions.
