The All India Chess Federation (AICF) has announced its intention to bid for the right to host the World Chess Championship later this year. The marquee clash will feature Chennai’s D. Gukesh, who has earned the right to challenge defending champion Ding Liren of China by virtue of his victory at the Candidates Chess Tournament in Toronto, Canada. Gukesh, at just 17 years of age, has become the youngest-ever contender for the world title. “We are open to discussions with FIDE, the apex chess body, and we are certain that the best World Championship will be held in India,” said AICF Secretary Dev Patel, who, at only 24, is also the head of the Gujarat Chess Association. “For me now, the most important aim is not just to submit a proposal to FIDE, but to use this opportunity to make chess a truly popular sport in the country,” he added. The AICF plans to formally contact FIDE regarding their bid on Friday. Several Indian states, including Gukesh’s home state of Tamil Nadu, as well as Gujarat, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, are in contention to host the event. Patel, who has a deep understanding of the game and the needs of players, expressed confidence in India’s ability to provide an exceptional platform for the championship. “I know firsthand the complexities involved in chess and the tremendous efforts made by parents, coaches, and other support personnel to nurture talents like Gukesh,” he said. “Ultimately, the winner will be the game of chess itself,” added Patel, who was elected to his position last month.
