Peoples Conference chairperson Sajjad Lone has received another boost to his campaign for the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat, scheduled for polls on May 20. Former Jammu and Kashmir deputy chief minister Muzaffar Hussan Baig and his wife, Safina Baig, the district development council chairperson from Baramulla, have pledged their support to Lone. This endorsement comes on the heels of the support Lone received earlier this week from the Altaf Bukhari-led Apni Party. In a meeting at the Baig residence, Lone emphasized his right to seek support from the former deputy chief minister and his wife. Safina Baig, who won the DDC polls with the support of the Peoples Conference, expressed her confidence in Lone’s candidacy, highlighting their long-standing relationship. The Baigs’ considerable sway in the Baramulla and Sangrama segments, particularly among the Pahari community, is expected to bolster Lone’s prospects. Muzaffar Baig, an MP from 2014 to 2019 and a founding member of the People’s Democratic Party, is currently not affiliated with any political party. However, he attended an event earlier this year in Jammu and Srinagar hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to mark the death anniversary of PDP founder Mufti Sayeed. The support of the Baigs and the Apni Party is a significant development in the Baramulla Lok Sabha race, which is expected to be a direct contest between Lone and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah.
