Apple Cuts Vision Pro Headset Shipment Forecast Amidst Low Demand

Apple has reportedly cut its shipment forecast for the Vision Pro mixed reality headset for the rest of 2024. The company had previously planned to sell 700,000 to 800,000 units, but analyst Min-Chi Kuo now estimates that Apple will only sell around 400,000 to 450,000 units. This reduction in the shipment forecast is due to lower than anticipated demand for the Vision Pro. Apple originally launched the Vision Pro in the US in early 2024. The headset was seen as Apple’s attempt to enter the mixed-reality headset market and compete with Meta’s Quest 3. However, the Vision Pro’s high price tag of $3,500 has kept all but the most dedicated Apple fans and business users away from the product. While the Vision Pro received praise for its unique operating system, VisionOS, it has faced competition from Meta’s Quest 3, which offers comparable capabilities at a lower cost. As a result of the lower demand for the Vision Pro, Apple is reportedly adjusting its headset roadmap. The company may be planning to release a lower-cost headset beyond 2025. The slow and steady rise of mixed reality technology has been impacted by the poor performance of Apple’s Vision Pro headset. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has even claimed that his company’s Quest 3 headset is better than the Vision Pro. Apple is often seen as a trendsetter in new product markets, so the poor performance of the Vision Pro could have a negative impact on the entire mixed-reality industry.
