Chinese Formula One driver Zhou Guanyu’s future with Sauber now hangs in the balance, with reports emerging that German driver Nico Hulkenberg is poised to replace him once his contract with Haas expires this year. Sport1 claims that Hulkenberg has been offered a three-year contract extending until 2027, coinciding with Sauber’s takeover by Audi in 2026. An official announcement is reportedly expected in May.
In addition to Hulkenberg’s rumored arrival, whispers have also circulated regarding the potential departure of Carlos Sainz from Ferrari to Sauber. Sainz’s move could be prompted by the arrival of Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, fueling speculation further when Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko suggested that Ferrari would be unable to compete with an offer from Audi.
These developments leave Zhou, who has yet to score any racing points this season, in a precarious position. Despite expressing his desire to remain with Sauber, Zhou acknowledges the importance of securing a long-term contract, stating, ‘But I think from your third year, or fourth year [in F1] onwards, I think it’s right to say I’d like to have a longer contract, which can help you feel a lot more settled down, [and enable closer] development within the team.’
Ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, Sauber team chief Alessandro Alunni Bravi declined to provide any assurances regarding the positions of Zhou and Valtteri Bottas, stating, ‘There are 14 drivers without a contract fixed for next year. So, as all the teams, we are speaking with different drivers.’ Alunni Bravi emphasized the importance of providing their current drivers with a competitive car and welcomed the increased attractiveness of Sauber following Audi’s announcement and investment plans.
