Prime Minister Narendra Modi ignited a political storm on Thursday with his explosive remarks accusing the Congress party of manipulating rules to protect personal wealth and undermining the rights of backward communities. Addressing a rally in Morena, Madhya Pradesh, Prime Minister Modi asserted that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi abolished the inheritance law solely to safeguard the Gandhi family’s assets, which would have been partially claimed by the government upon the passing of his mother, Indira Gandhi. Modi vehemently condemned the Congress government in Karnataka for categorizing all Muslims in the state as OBCs, warning that the party will seek to extend this model nationwide. He highlighted that Congress’s actions have gradually diluted OBC reservations, depriving deserving candidates of opportunities in education and employment. The Prime Minister further revealed that the Congress-led government at the Centre in 2011 had attempted to allocate a portion of the 27% OBC reservation to a specific religion, a move that was later struck down by the Andhra Pradesh High Court and upheld by the Supreme Court. Expressing concern, Modi cautioned that Congress intends to implement this divisive policy on a national scale. The National Commission for Backward Castes (NCBC) has strongly criticized the Karnataka government’s decision, describing it as unjust to the OBC community. Despite having 36 castes already availing reservations under two OBC categories, the state government has granted an additional 4% blanket reservation to Muslims. The NCBC has demanded an explanation for this move, but the state government has yet to provide a satisfactory response.
