Buckingham Palace has announced that King Charles III will resume public-facing duties next week after being diagnosed with cancer nearly three months ago. The monarch had temporarily stepped back from public engagements in February, shortly after the diagnosis. Despite undergoing treatment, the 75-year-old king has continued to carry out his state duties, including reviewing government papers and meeting with the prime minister.
The palace confirmed that King Charles III will visit a cancer treatment center next week with his wife, Queen Camilla, to meet with medical specialists and patients. He will also host a state visit for the Emperor and Empress of later in June.
The announcement comes after a challenging time for the royal family, with both Charles and his daughter-in-law, Catherine, Princess of Wales, receiving cancer diagnoses. The king’s commitment to cutting costs and the decision of Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, to step down from their royal duties have also created an unprecedented crisis for the monarchy. Despite these challenges, King Charles III remains committed to his public service and is expected to continue his recovery while carrying out his duties as monarch.
The king has made a high-profile appearance over the Easter weekend, attending a Sunday church service at Windsor Castle, west of London. This marked his first public appearance since stepping back from public-facing duties in February.
