Previously, CBSE allowed students opting for Basic Mathematics in Class 10 to study Standard Mathematics in Class 11 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The board has extended this allowance for the 2024-25 academic session to ensure a smooth transition for affected students. As per the official notification, CBSE has emphasized that schools play a crucial role in assessing students’ aptitude and ability before permitting them to enroll in Standard Mathematics in Class 11.
The board has also reminded students that subject selection in Class 10 is crucial as changes will not be permitted once subjects are finalized in the List of Combinations (LOC). This policy has been in place since 2019, when CBSE introduced two levels of Mathematics for Classes 11 and 12: Standard Mathematics and Basic Mathematics. Standard Mathematics is designed for students aiming for advanced study in Mathematics, while Basic Mathematics caters to those who may not wish to pursue Mathematics at higher levels. The board’s decision to allow Basic Mathematics students to opt for Standard Mathematics in Class 11 provides greater flexibility and options for students’ educational journeys.
