The BJP has alleged that Wadettiwar’s accusations, which are based on a book by retired police officer SM Mushriff, are baseless and aimed at tarnishing Nikam’s reputation and inciting emotions. Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar has stated that the party has written to the Election Commission of India seeking action against Wadettiwar, who is a star campaigner for the Congress, and against the party itself for spreading lies. Shelar has emphasized that Kasab, who was captured alive during the 26/11 attacks, was convicted and sentenced to death after due legal process. He has also questioned whether Uddhav Thackeray, chief of the Shiv Sena (UBT), supports Wadettiwar’s claims. The Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and Sharad Pawar-led NCP form the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Nikam, a former special public prosecutor, has represented the state in high-profile cases like the Mumbai serial bomb blasts and the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. He is making his political debut from the Mumbai North Central seat on a BJP ticket and faces city Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad as his main opponent.
