West Indies legend Courtney Walsh has advised India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah to prioritize staying fit to maintain his exceptional bowling form. Bumrah is widely regarded as one of the best all-format bowlers in the world, possessing a unique bowling action that gives him an edge over batters. However, this same action also puts immense strain on his body, particularly his back, making him prone to injuries. Walsh, himself a highly respected cricketer, emphasized that Bumrah’s fitness is crucial for his continued success. He advised the Indian pacer to manage his workload and injuries effectively, stating, “You can only play if you are fit enough.” Walsh believes that injury prevention will help Bumrah become fitter, stronger, and an even more formidable bowler.
Bumrah has been exceptional since returning from a stress fracture in August 2023, performing consistently in all three formats of the game. He has showcased his skills in the Asia Cup, ODI World Cup, and Test series against South Africa and England, carrying his form into the ongoing IPL season. Walsh believes that Bumrah’s fitness will be a key factor in India’s success at the upcoming T20 World Cup in June.
Walsh also commented on India’s decision to include four spinners in their squad for the T20 World Cup, stating that he is not surprised by this selection. He believes that slow and sluggish wickets in the West Indies, as well as the early starts, may have influenced this decision. However, he highlighted that India still possesses quality fast bowlers who can complement their spin attack.
Walsh expressed optimism about the West Indies’ chances in the T20 World Cup, where they will be co-hosts. He believes that the team has a balanced squad with a good mix of pace and spin bowlers. Walsh expects the tournament to be competitive, with many teams fielding strong bowling units. He predicts that the teams that execute their plans effectively will emerge victorious.
